FNE at Ji.hlava IDFF 2019: Emerging Producer Marcian Lazăr, Romania

By

BUCHAREST: Marcian Lazăr from Axel Film has been selected to participate in the 2020 Emerging Producers programme for documentary film producers, which kicks off at the 23rd edition of the Ji.hlava IDFF, taking place 24-29 October 2019. FNE spoke with Marcian Lazăr about the issues facing documentary film producers.

With a background in engineering, business and project management, Marcian Lazăr started his work as producer for Strada Film in 2008, where he produced fiction and long documentaries.

In 2016 he took over Axel Film, a film production and equipment rental company, in order to produce daring independent projects with directors such as Ioana Grigore, Monica Stan, Bogdan Mustaţă, Adi Voicu and Alexandru Badea.

His credits include the 3D experimental feature film My Life Rehearsed in One Leg by Bogdan Mustaţă and the short fiction film The Last Trip to the Seaside / Ultimul drum spre mare by Adi Voicu, selected for Cannes’ Semaine de la Critique 2019. Both films were produced through Axel Film.

FNE: Why did you become a documentary film producer?

Marcian Lazăr: I used to work in a production company on fiction projects and at one moment somebody wanted to work with us on a documentary in Ferentari (an underdeveloped neighborhood in Bucharest). I started to produce that project.

FNE: What is the biggest practical issue that you have to deal with in your own country as a documentary film producer?

Marcian Lazăr: The shooting permissions from the state institutions are sometimes hard to obtain and time consuming.

FNE: What are the crucial topics that you explore as a documentary film producer?

Marcian Lazăr: For the moment, we are exploring in two different projects the exceptional life and creation of two artists - one is a pioneer of Romanian spectralist music, Iancu Dumitrescu, and the other is a Jewish-Russian Avantgarde Jazz Music producer, Leo Feigin.

FNE: Do you have a project that you are bringing to Emerging Producers in search of coproducers and partners?

Marcian Lazăr: Yes, the above mentioned projects: Baby In The Woods directed by Ioana Grigore and On An Almost Cosmic Level, Unimaginable directed by Alexandru Badea.

FNE: What is the most important thing a potential partner/coproducer should know about you?

Marcian Lazăr: At Axel Film we highly appreciate the teamwork approach. We welcome partners that can enrich our vision.
