BUCHAREST: Brigitte Drodtloff is in development with her debut feature Chopin's Wunderkind, a biopic of piano prodigy Carl Filtsch, who was born in today’s Romania and became the protégé of Chopin at a very young age. The film is a Romanian/German/US coproduction produced by Gabriela Suciu through Atelier de Film Romania. The project has already been approved for the cash rebate in Romania.

Born in Sebeș, in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Carl Filtsch (1830-1845) was known as the wunderkind of Transylvania.  At 9 he was well-known in Vienna, where his friend, the Archduke Franz Joseph I of Austria, introduced him to Chopin, who was a very difficult and demanding teacher.

The film focuses on the relationship between Filtsch and Chopin. It will be shot in English, Romanian, German and French. The 25 compositions of Filtsch were discovered in the 1960s.

Brigitte Drodtloff, who was born in Bucharest into a German-Romanian family and is now based in Germany, wrote the script and is also coproducing through Germany’s Triarte Munchen. Chris D. Nebe is associate producer through the US independent company Monarex Hollywood.

The film is currently in the script development and financing stage. From a budget of 2.4 m EUR 45% is already secured, producer Gabriela Suciu told FNE.

The project was submitted for the cash rebate in Romania in July 2019 and it will receive approximately 564,000 EUR / 2,686,320 RON as 35% cash rebate, according to the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis.

Shooting will take place in 2020-2021 entirely in Romania, in several locations including Sebeș (the native town of Carl Filtsch), Sinaia, Sibiu and Bucharest. The Sebeș City Hall issued a letter of intent to confirm that it will support the shooting.

The film is expected to be finished by the end of 2021/beginning of 2022. Chopin's Wunderkind will be distributed in Romania by Atelier de Film.
