BUCHAREST: Romanian actor Emanuel Pârvu is making his debut in Cannes as a director after playing in Cristian Mungiu’s Best Director-awarded Graduation / Bacalaureat (2016). Pârvu’s third directorial work Three Kilometers to the End of the World / Trei kilometri până la capătul lumii has been added to the Competition of the 77th Cannes Film Festival (14 – 25 May 2024).

Adi (17) is spending the summer in his home village in the Danube Delta. One night he is brutally attacked on the street, the next day his world is turned upside-down. His parents no longer look at him as they did, and the seeming tranquillity of the village starts to crack.

The main cast includes Ciprian Chiujdea, Bogdan Dumitrache, Laura Vasiliu, Ingrid Micu-Berescu, Valeriu Andriuță and Adrian Titieni.

The film is a 100% Romanian coproduction produced by Miruna Berescu through Asociația FAMart in coproduction with FAMart Films. It was supported by the Romanian Film Centre (CNC) with 447,200 EUR / 2.2 m RON in 2023, and also by Publicis Groupe Media Bucharest, MMS Communications Romania and House of Media.

The budget was approximately 1 m EUR, Miruna Berescu told FNE.

The film was shot by the Romanian cinematographer Silviu Stavilă in the Danube Delta (Sfântu Gheorghe and Dunavăț) in September – October 2023. The Danube Delta enhances a paradox that the audience should experience. “The visual paradise which is the location is in striking contrast with the events of the story. The human actions are negating the nature and are closing the horizon of a child by closing his future”, said Emanuel Pârvu in a statement.

Negotiations for a domestic distributor are currently undergoing.

The project took part in the CineLink Co-Production Market within the Sarajevo FF in 2021, at the same festival where Pârvu’s directorial debut Meda or the Not So Bright Side of Things / Meda sau partea nu prea fericită a lucrurilor (2017, produced by Asociația FAMart in coproduction with DaKINO Productions and Ceramus Film) was awarded for Best Director and Actor.

Emanuel Pârvu’s sophomore feature Mikado / Marocco (2021, produced by Asociația FAMart in coproduction with Bogdan George Apetri and Natura Party) premiered in the New Directors Competition at the San Sebastian Film Festival. As an actor, Pârvu starred in 2021 in Bogdan George Apetri’s Miracle / Miracol, produced by Romania’s The East Company Productions in coproduction with Czech Cineart TV and Latvian Tasse Film.
