    1/12: 25 years of the EU's MEDIA programme: Building on success to further support audiovisual creation – European Commission website

    Hundreds of top filmmakers, industry representatives and policy makers gathered in Brussels on 1 and 2 December to explore the challenges and opportunities ahead for Europe's audiovisual sector, including the future of the EU's MEDIA programme, which is 25 years old this year.

    Efficient and effective copyright rules for the Digital Single Market need to take into consideration the roles of stakeholders, be they rights-holders, facilitators of content accessibility or users. This reform requires the correct identification of the obstacles encountered by stakeholders and these obstacles can find a solution in copyright, writes MEP Therese Comodini Cachia.

    ‘A modernisation of copyright rules to fit the digital age is probably the single most important reform we can envisage to make a worthy living for our many artists, creators and designers in the cultural and creative sector’, said Co-Rapporteur Christian Ehler MEP before the adoption of a joint initiative Report from the Industry and Culture Committees of the European Parliament.

    Portability

    29/11: New portability rules will ensure consumers can access their online content wherever they go in Europe –  European Parliament website

    New rules to enable EU citizens subscribing to services that give access to online music, games, films or sporting events, to enjoy this content while abroad in another EU country were approved by the Legal Affairs Committee. 

    Romania

    1/12: Romania Approves New Film Law – FNE

    The Romanian government approved an emergency ordinance regarding the film industry shortly before the parliamentary elections that took place on 11 December 2016. Most of the articles of the draft proposed by the Ministry of Culture were approved except the ones regarding additional sources for the Film Fund.
