Gopo Awards 2014 – The Winners

    Monday night, March 24, the National Opera hosted the 8th edition of the Gopo Awards which took place in front of over 800 guests.

    Thanks to his film The Child's Pose, Calin Peter Netzer took home three of the main trophies of the night: Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay (the film was co-written with Razvan Radulescu). The protagonists of the film were awarded three of the acting prizes: Best Actress in a Main Role (Luminita Gheorghiu), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Vlad Ivanov) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Ilinca Goia). The film also received the Sound (Dana Lucretia Bunescu, Cristian Tarnovetchi and Cristinel Sirli) and Editing (Dana Lucretia Bunescu) awards. Last but not least, The Child's Pose won the Audience Award for the highest grossing Romanian film at the box office. All in all, the film took home 9 Gopo Awards.

    Victor Rebengiuc took home the Best Actor in a Main Role award for his performance in The Japanese Dog. The Pro Cinema award, handed over by Cristian Tudor Popescu, went to "one of the most gifted directors of his generation", Marian Crisan.

    The Best Cinematography award went to DoP Oleg Mutu, for The Unsaved and the Best Art Direction award was won by Cristian Niculescu (Domestic).

    Miss Christina took home three awards: Best Costumes (Maria Miu), Best Make-up and Hair (Cristina Temelie, Nastasia Mateiu) and Best Original Music (Jon Wygens). Radu Aldea, the DoP of the film, received the RSC – Romanian Society of Cinematographers award granted by the Cinematographers' guild.

    The Bucharest Experiment, by Tom Wilson, won the Gopo for Best Documentary. The Best Documentary Short trophy went to Vibratia, by Germain Kanda, while Radu Jude took home the fifth Gopo of his career, this time for Best Short, with Shadow of a Cloud. The Best European Film award went to Amour (directed by Michael Haneke). Thus, the distributor Independenta Film added the sixth trophy to its record number of wins.

    The Unsaved by Igor Cobileanski won the Best Debut Film, while the Young Hope Award went to DoP Tudor Panduru, for the short film Brigada neagra

    The Gopo Awards (Romanian: Premiile Gopo) are the national Romanian film awards. They were established in 2007 and were named in honour of Romanian film director Ion Popescu-Gopo. The trophy is a sculpture by Romanian artist Adrian Ilfoveanu representing Gopo's Little Man, the main character of Gopo's animation films.

    The Gopo Prizes honour the best Romanian cinematic achievements of the previous year or, in the case of the Best European Film Award, the best European film distributed in Romania in the previous year.
