With pride, Slovak Film Institute brings you the news of classic Slovak films showcased in the programs of two major international film festivals: the Festival Lumière (October 11 – 19, 2025) and the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia (October 9 – 19, 2025). Both events rank among the most important festivals in their respective fields: Festival Lumière is dedicated to the presentation of world film heritage, while Sitges focuses on genre cinema, particularly horror, fantasy, and science fiction.

The program of the classic film festival held for the 17th time in Lyon, the cradle of cinema, will include the digitally restored film The Bells Toll for the Barefooted (1965). Directed by Stanislav Barabáš, this drama set in the snow-covered Slovak mountains at the end of the World War II delivers a humanistic message about the futility of dividing people into enemies. The screenplay for this unconventional anti-heroic war film, centered on individuals facing existential struggles, was written by Ivan Bukovčan. The leading roles were portrayed by Vlado Müller, Ivan Rajniak, Axiel Dietrich and Ewa Krzyzewska.

The film will be screend in the Treasures and Curiosities section under the Lumière Classics label, which highlights the finest restorations of 20th century films, including lesser-known and archival works. Within this section, the film will have its renewed premiere as the seventh digitally restored film from the collections of the National Film Archive of the Slovak Film Institute to be presented at the festival.

At the 58th edition of the festival in Sitges, the fairy-tale film Freckled Max and the Spooks (1987) by Juraj Jakubisko will be screened in the Retrospective section. Jakubisko's film is a bizarre and free-spirited horror parody of fantastic tales of Frankenstein, originally created as a seven-part television series. Earlier this year, the film was released on Blu-ray by the American label Deaf Crocodile, in collaboration with the Slovak Film Institute. This limited deluxe edition includes not only the restored film but also extensive bonus materials – the behind-the-scenes documentary, a portrait of the director, and three video interviews.

While roaming around the world with a circus troupe, young orphan Max arrives at the castle of Baron Frankenstein, surrounded by mysterious creatures that are sometimes a little absurd and creepy. And although each one of them is unique, they all have something in common: they feel lonely and desperately crave a little love. A zany romantic horror adventure that parodies the fantastic tales of Frankenstein with a free-spirited and extraordinarily bizarre style.
