Cyprus Guilt opens Athens festival

After the world opening in Montreal IFF, Guilt, a Cyprus/Greece co-production directed by Vassilis Mazomenos, has been chosen to officially open the Panorama of European Cinema International Film Festival in Athens (Oct. 22-Nov. 1).

The film was chosen as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Cyprus. Guilt relates, through a nightmare, the tribulations of a Greek Cypriot arms dealer during the island's turbulent years, from the British occupation to the Turkish invasion of 1974. Cyprus President Christofias has been invited to attend the opening.

Besides Mazomenos' film, the Panorama of European Cinema organizes a tribute to the Cypriot Cinema, together with an exhibition of posters and stills, to take place in the recently built Michael Cacoyiannis Foundation. Its programme includes documentaries filmed during the 1970's covering problems arising from the island's invasion (among them Cacoyiannis' feature documentary Attila ‘74) as well as feature films, including The Rape of Aphrodite by Andreas Pantzis, Roads and Oranges by Danezi-Knudsen, and The Descent of the Nine by Christos Shiopahas.

Mazomenos' film has also been selected to be presented in the Cinema of the World Section of the 40th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
