FNE at Cannes: EFP Producer on the Move Anneli Ahven

By Martin Aadamsoo

Estonian Producer on the Move Anneli Ahven (38), a brilliant workaholic from a group of female producers that have prominently featured in Estonia's film industry for the last decade, has a production portfolio that belies her age.

Prolific in documentaries, features and shorts, Anneli has accumulated enough experience to work across borders and in all formats. Her features include Shop of Dreams (2005), Men at Arms (2005), Curse of a Werewolf (2005, straight to TV), Where Souls Go (2007), Taarka (2008), and The Visitor as a co-producer (2008), all of which have screened at film markets in Cannes and Berlin and made waves at the domestic box office and with critics. This year, Anneli heads to Cannes with her new film A Friend of Mine (director Mart Kivastik, release date Autumn 2010) that has completed most of principal photography.

Having studied film production at the University of Hamburg from 2000-2002, Anneli is open to international co-productions in both English and German speaking environments. She has worked on co-productions with Finland, Germany, UK, the Ukraine, and Austria and developed projects in several MEDIA-funded programmes. Anneli has worked mostly from the shingle Exitfilm, one the oldest independent production companies in Estonia founded in 1992, but has done stints with other companies occasionally. She is currently member of the board of the Association of Estonian Film Producers.

As a side-job, Anneli Ahven is the head of BA Production Studies at the Baltic Film and Media School in Tallinn, the only international film school in Northern Europe. This gives her a close look at the up-and-coming talent from Estonia and the wider Baltic region that has over the years led to several cooperations with former students.

Generally acknowledged as one of the persons to talk to on Estonia's film scene, Anneli combines the curiosity for all things new and an eye for practical detail that make her an inspiring partner to work with.
