Kontroll producer lines up crime film

By Gyorgy Karpati

Hungarian producer Tamas Hutlassa is looking to line up Eastern European co-producers for a film based on a prize-winning script.

The Final Assignment by Hutlassa, Gyorgy Odze and Istvan Tasnadi won third place in 19th Hartley-Merrill International Screenwriting Prize. A political-crime story based on the unsolved murder of Janos Elbert, a popular literature professor and teacher who was shot in death in 1983. The script is based on Odze's 2006 fictional-documentary novel in 2006.

Hutlassa produced Nimrod Antal's directorial debut and local blockbuster Kontroll. "I'm now negotiating for the potential candidates about the directing and started to put the budget," Hutlassa told FNE. "Because of the story set in the 1980's and we'd like to evoke the era as authentic as possible the budget should be at least 1.5 million euros. I'm thinking of an international co-production, and just starting negotiations with potential partners. Because of the well known historical facts we're especially looking for co-production companies from Eastern-Europe and from Russia," he added.

The shooting is tentatively planned for the second half of 2009.
