Summer box office in Hungary

By Dávid Dercsényi
U.S. films drew strong summer box office, with several titles competing for the top spot.

Angels & Demons proved a strong start for the summer months, with 185,000 admissions. The Terminator Salvation stayed in the Top 10 for seven weeks 172,000 viewers. The new Transformers movie Revenge of the Fallen had 96,000 admissions on opening weekend), but fell short of 200,000 total.

The Half-Blood Prince Harry Potter installment drew 167,000 (more than the typical box office total for all films in Hungarian distribution on most week-ends) fans for opening week-end, with 460,000 total for the summer. Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinasaurs, however, is likely to end the year as the top draw, with 593,000 viewers in 10 weeks. That still falls short of the hit of 2008, Mamma Mia!, which had more than 761,000 viewers, But in general, exhibitors were relieved that in spite of the global economic crisis summer film attendance remained upbeat.
