FESTIVALS: The Event Wins Riga IFF

    RIGA: The Riga International Film Festival First Award in history went to Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa for his documentary The Event about a failed 1991 communist coup d’etat attempt in Moscow.

    The festival’s international jury stated the award is given “for a distinguished approach to a historical event and artistic brilliance in capturing the existential spirit of being.”

    The festival gave a Special Mention to Grímur Hákonarson for the Icelandic film Rams.

    The festival gave a Lifetime Achievement award to cinematographer Miks Zvirbulis for his work on some 40 documentaries and features.

    The Riga IFF concluded on 25 October 2015.
