Eastern European Film Festival to be Launched in Argentina

By Marketa Hodouskova

Al Este del Plata will bring Eastern European cinema to Buenos Aires and Córdoba from 6 to 9 November 2014 and it will develop into a full-fledged film festival in 2015.

The panorama programme will screen feature films never released in Argentina, many of them awarded in Cannes, Berlin, Karlovy Vary and Venice. This initial version of the festival will introduce the first edition which will be held in June 2015 with a complete programme including competition, international guests, debates and special events.

The festival replicates an already existing concept - A l’Est du Nouveau, the only Eastern European film festival in France, which will have its 10th edition in Rouen in 2015. The formula has also been reproduced in Lima. Since 2009 Al Este de Lima is the first film festival in Latin America focusing exclusively on Central and Eastern European cinema.

Al Este de Lima was awarded by Peru’s Ministry of Culture in 2014. The festival also handled a limited distribution of the Polish film Ida by Pawel Pawlikowski, which received the main prize in the last edition.
