Hungarian and Romanian sports channels planned

By Gyorgy Karpati
Digi Communication and Broadcast Ltd. (www.digi.tv) will launch new sports channels in Hungary and Romania.

The Transylvanian owner, Zoltan Erdelyi, plans to launch sport channels in Hungary (DisiSport Hungary) and in Romania (DigiSport Romania) this summer.

DigiSport Hungary offered nearly double the sum (an estimated 2.5 million euro) for broadcast rights of the Hungarian league football matches as the leading commercial channel RTL Klub (www.rtlklub.hu). Though UPC Hungary's Sport1 TV has an option, the rights will be probably bought by DigiSport Hungary. Some Hungarian professional football matches will also be available on Duna TV (www.dunatv.hu) (bought for an estimated 322.000 euro) and on Hungarian state owned public TV channel MTV (www.mtv.hu).

Earlier DigiSport Hungary secured the rights to 12-14 Champions League matches over TV channel TV2 (www.tv2.hu) and also bought the rights of the German Bundesliga matches from Eurosport.

The company also bought the rights of the Spanish La Liga matches for three years and is in discussion over Italian Il Calcio rights, both for Romania.

The company, established in 2000, has digital satellite, cable broadcast and IP services in Hungary and digital satellite broadcast service in the Czech Republic, Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia.
