FNE at TIFF: Romanian Days - Turn off the Lights

    CLUJ-NAPOCA: The Bucharest-based young Serbian director Ivana Mladenovic investigates the life of four 19 years old boys after their release from penitentiary in her long documentary Turn off the Lights.

    Turn off the Lights was written by Mladenovic and Bianca Oana, and shot by Luchian Ciobanu and Claudiu Ciprian Popa. It was produced by Daniel Mitulescu and Strada Film (www.stradafilm.ro ) in co-production with Digital Cube (www.digitalcube.ro ). Oana is the executive producer. The budget was 150,000 euro.

    The project received a production grant of 53,900 euro (228,000 RON) from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro ) in 2009, and was the first documentary selected for Sarajevo CineLink - Work In Progress (http://www.sff.ba/en/cinelink ).

    Shooting started in 2008 concurrent with acting workshops for youth prisoners conducted by the director Florin Şerban for his film If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle/Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier (also produced by Strada Film and awarded at the Berlinale 2010). Shooting wraped in April 2010. Ana Ilieşiu is the editor. The film premiered at 2012 Tribeca Film Festival (www.tribecafilm.com ) in New York.
