Hungary's Mirage Film Studio Kft is joining in this historical tragi-comedy with a strong autobiographical side, set in 1968 during the Prague Spring.
Inspired by her own family story, Lăzărescu follows the trip that two brothers and their father undertook from Romania to the Democratic Republic of Germany in 1968. When the Prague Spring explodes, as they cannot pass through Czechoslovakia, they receive a two days visa to the West. Their biggest dilemma is to choose or not to choose freedom.
Shooting will start on 8 September and it will take place mostly in Romania, in the cities of Arad, Timişoara, Târgovişte, as well as in Germany. The main characters are played by Alex Mărgineanu (California Dreamin'), the Romanian-born German actor Ovidiu Schumacher and the newcomer Răzvan Enciu. The film will be spoken in Romanian and German.
The producers of the film are Cătălin Mitulescu (Strada Film), David Lindner (filmailee) and Andrea Taschler (Mirage Film Studio Kft). The budget is almost 3m EUR, and the project is completely funded, Mitulescu told FNE. The project participated in CineLink Plus 2012 and Les Ateliers d'Angers. It received a production grant of 380,290 EUR/1,698,000 RON from the Romanian Film Center and over 300,000 EUR from Film-Fernseh-Fonds Bayern (FFF). The premiere is set for 2015.
Born in Romania in 1979, Anca Miruna Lăzărescu emigrated to Germany in 1990. Her short film Silent River received more than 75 awards in festivals and it ran for the Golden Bear in 2011.
