Romanian TV chooses new director

By Iulia Blaga

Alexandru Lăzescu, a former journalist, has been selected as the new president/general manager of Romania's public television. Parliament also approved the new Administrative Council of the public television, the Romanian Television Society (SRTv, www.tvr.ro) on June 29.

Since the government has not yet passed a new bill on the depoliticization of public TV, Lăzescu's appointment was made under the old regulations. The former council was dismissed along with the president/general manager Alexandru Sassu, after the Romanian Parliament rejected the 2008 annual report at the end of March. The deficit of Romanian National Television (SRTv, www.tvr.ro) rose by 1.36 million in 2009, for an overall gap of 13 million euros.
