VENICE: Romanian director Mihai Mincan’s Milk Teeth / Dinti de lapte (Romania, France, Denmark, Greece, Bulgaria) screens in the Orizzonti competition of Venice Film Festival this year. This is not the first time in Venice for Mincan, his debut feature the sea-going narrative To the North, screened in Venice in 2022 but the two films could not be more different.

VENICE: It’s a big year for Hungarian film in Venice this year. Oscar winning Hungarian director László Nemes’s new film Orphan (Hungary, United Kingdom, Germany, France) screens in competition in Venice 82. It is one of two Hungarian films in the main competition with Silent Friend (Germany, Hungary, France) directed by Ildikó Enyedi also screening in Venice 82 this year.

VENICE: Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska’s Mother screened in the Orizzonti competition of Venice 82 bringing her very personal view of seven days that shaped the life of the iconic religious figure Mother Teresa. Born in Skopje and ethnically Albanian Mother Teresa is a figure of importance in the history of North Macedonia as well has her global reputation as one of the most well known contemporary figures of the Catholic church.

VENICE: Slovak director Tereza Nvotová’s Father / Otec (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland), which screens in the Orizzonti Competition of Venice Film Festival, is based on a true story about the accidental death of a child in a small town in Slovakia, for which the father was unintentionally responsible.

VENICE: Any film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and boasting Emma Stone in the leading role is going to bring high expectations. Bugonia, which screened in competition in Venice 82, did not disappoint.

VENICE: The Venezia 82 Jury, chaired by Alexander Payne, gave the Golden Lion for Best Film to Father, Mother, Sister, Brother directed by Jim Jarmusch. Luna Wedler was awarded the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor or Actress for her role in the film Silent Friend (Germany, Hungary, France) directed by Ildikó Enyedi. Silent Friend also picked up numerous collateral awards including The International Critics Prize (FIPRESCI Prize) for Best Film from Venezia 82 main competition.

VENICE: FNE has teamed up with critics attending the Venice Film Festival to rate the films in the Main Competition, Orizzonti and Critics Week, giving the films 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 stars. 5 is the best and 1 is the worst. The ratings give an overview of critics’ opinions from a large number of countries and provide insights to what critics in many different countries think about the programme.

VENICE: FNE spoke to Cristian Mungiu, Member of the Jury of 82nd Venice Film Festival, about his career in film and his new film Fjord starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. which was shot in Norway and is in postproduction. It was a Romanian coproduction with France, Norway, Finland and Sweden and it is his first film in English. Mungiu also wrote the script.

VENICE: FNE spoke to Jedrzej Sablinski the CEO of DI Factory Poland, who was responsible for restoration of the Polish film Przypadek / Blind Chance, directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski, that screened in the Venice Classics section of the Venice Film Festival this year.
