15th Bratislava IFF will present courageous stories about human strength

The 15th Bratislava IFF will present films about human strength. Such are the stories Wadjda from Saudi Arabia, Nairobi Half Life from Kenya, The Broken Circle Breakdown from Belgium or La Paz from Argentina – these are only a couple of films narrating strong stories on courageous people. Programme sections of the 15th IFF Bratislava, taking place from 6 to 12 November, will offer numerous high-quality and impressive films.

In the competition section of the 15th IFF Bratislava the festival-award-seeking films will include feature, documentary and short films, completed by traditional programme sections Panorama, Cutting Edge, and Made in Slovakia. Tribute is dedicated to one of the most significant European directors Billie August, who will also to receive the Award for Artistic Excellence in World Cinematography, on Friday, 8 November 2013. The programme also contains the section Asylum – Short Films, which will be presented within the festival selection The Best of Azyl and the section Focus will be dedicated to Israeli Cinema this year.

The traditional, theme-oriented section Stories - subtitled Films of Human Strength for the 15th Bratislava IFF, has been compiled by film journalist Radovan Holub. As he says, “These are narrative films, where life is more like a never-ending fight, sometimes with a happyend, sometimes, on the contrary, ending very sadly. Heroes of these stories have to overcome obstacles. Despite life blows, they go on, never giving up. They do not want to surrender.”

The section’s central themes are courage and humanity. Such is the young courageous Muslim schoolgirl Wadjda (in Haifaa al Mansour's debut of the same name), who comes to school without her veil. Or, a poor shop assistant from Kenya, who desires to act in the National Theatre in Nairobi in David Tosh Gitonga's film Nairobi Half Life. Very impressive is also the story of The Broken Circle Breakdown by the Belgian director Felix van Groeningen  about an extravagant country singer, who is put together with his wife under tough life's trial. The film was a great success at this year's Berlinale, where it received the Viewers' Award and also the Europa Cinemas Label award and was selected among the finalists for the European Parliament LUX Award 2013. The section Stories – Films of Human Strength includes also a representative of the Slovak cinema – Juraj Lehotský's film Miracle – a story of a girl from a detention house, who does not want to give up her dream about love. The film received Jury's Special Mention in the East of the West section of the IFF Karlovy Vary.
