Free Spirit Competition at 30th WFF

    15 independent films from all over the world will compete for the Free Spirit Award at 30th Warsaw Film Festival:

    Alice in Marialand / Alicja w świecie Marii  / Alicia en el pais de Maria, dir. Jesus Magaña Vazquez (Mexico 2014), 86 mins.

    Mexican thriller. A 33-year-old writer's girlfriend dies in a car crash and he is left in a coma. His mind starts mixing the past with the present…

    Anatomy of a Paper Clip / Anatomia spinacza / Yamamori clip koujo no atari, dir. Ikeda Akira (Japan 2013), 99 mins.

    Kogure has a job at a small factory where he works day after day making dozens of paper clips by hand from wire. He is stoical about his life. A surprising and sometimes absurdly funny film inspired by old Japanese folk tales.

    Before I Disappear / Zanim zniknę, dir. Shawn Christensen(USA 2014), 95 mins.

    The dark night of the soul - that's where Richie is right now. He's had enough and is thinking of suicide. His elder sister, to whom he hasn't spoken in years, asks him to take care of her 11-year-old daughter Sophie for a few hours. The film expands on Shawn Christensen's short film Curfew, winner of an Academy Award and dozens of other prizes.

    Car Park / Parking / Parkoló, dir. Bence Miklauzič (Hungary 2014), 91 mins.

    In Budapest anyone can park their car wherever they like, except the spot where the Legionnaire has buried a dead pigeon. Imre, owner of a 1968 Ford Mustang, doesn't know that... A madcap comedy.

    Cold in July / Chłód w lipcu, dir. Jim Mickle (USA 2014), 109 mins.

    Texas 1989. Richard kills a man breaking into his home. Soon the burglar's ex-con father rolls into town, bent on revenge. A suspenseful thriller with a choice cast: Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard, Don Johnson.

    Echoes of Times / Echa czasu / Odmevi časa, dir. Ema Kugler (Slovenia 2014), 92 mins.

    The greatest human delusion is that individuals are free. A poetic film by a Slovenian artist, with sequences from the borderline of reality and dreams. As she says herself, this is a "handmade" project by one person.

    Futureless Things / Beznadziejni, dir. Kim Kyung-mook, (South Korea 2014), 107 mins.

    A cinematic mixture: black comedy, musical, fantasy, even sitcom and thriller. Thirteen episodes in which we accompany a student, a musician, a lesbian, a North Korean defector and others, all dressed in the same shop uniform during one work shift.

    Halfway / W pół drogi / Halfweg, dir. Geoffrey Enthoven (Belgium 2014), 115 mins.

    Stephen is in the midst of an emotionally tough divorce. He needs peace and quiet. He buys a house at a bargain price and finally wants to get some rest. One day a man wearing a towel comes out of the shower at his new home and claims to be the owner... A tragicomedy by a master of the genre. 'Hasta la vista' (2011), the previous film of the director won People's Choice Award for Best European Film at EFA.

    Kafka's The Burrow / Kafka – Schron / Kafka's Der Bau, dir. Jochen Alexander Freydank (Germany 2014), 110 mins.

    Franz, a 40-something man of success, lives in a super-secure fortress of a condominium building. Even so, he feels threatened. He becomes obsessed with catching a mysterious persecutor. A film based on the unfinished short story 'The Burrow' by Franz Kafka. Jochen Alexander Freydank directed 'Toyland', which won the Oscar® for the Best Live Action Short Film in 2009.

    Let's Sin / Chodźmy pogrzeszyć / Itirazim Var, dir. Onur Ünlü (Turkey 2014), 110 mins.

    An imam investigates a murder at his mosque. His methods are just as unusual as he is. A classical detective story in a dark comedy.

    Nocturne / Nokturn, dir. Saul Pincus (Canada 2014), 117 mins.

    Cindy is 36 and she can't sleep. She often goes out at night and walks along the streets waiting for morning. One night she meets Armen. Like her, he wanders the dark streets, but for a completely different reason. Their fates become mysteriously intertwined…

    Nomadic Childhoods / Koczownicze dzieciństwo / Enfances nomades, dir. Christophe Boula (France 2014), 94 mins.

    Most nomads realize that their traditional world is inexorably disappearing. A portrait of Asian nomadic societies in Tibet, Mongolia and Siberia from the point of view of the youngest generation at a critical moment of their lives.

    The Owners / Właściciele / Ukkylikamshat, dir. Adilkhan Yerzhanov (Kazakhstan 2014), 93 mins.

    When three siblings run out of money, they are forced to leave Almaty and travel to their mother's native village to move into the house they've inherited. Upon arrival they discover that a local gangster, brother of the police chief, is living in their house.

    Tada's Do-It-All House: Disconcerto / Tada zrobi wszystko / Mahoro ekimae kyôsôkyoku, dir. Tatsushi Omori (Japan 2014), 124 mins.

    Keisuke Tada owns a business called Tada's Do-It-All House. He is helped by his high school friend Haruhiko Gyoten. One day their ordered world is turned upside down by the unexpected arrival of Gyoten's 5-year-old daughter. A madcap comedy about two ordinary pals mixed up in extraordinary circumstances.

    Travelator, dir. Dušan Milić (Serbia 2014), 105 mins.

    Eighteen-year-old Slav is an eager first-person shooter gamer. One day he is hired for a real-life killing. A film showing the confusion of today's young people living in a virtual world that increasingly often affects the choices they make in real life. The Director Dušan Milić was the co-writer of  the bulgarian comedy 'The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner', which won Special Jury Award  at WFF 2008.
