With the start of the largest film festival in Lithuania approaching, it is time to introduce one of this year’s competition programmes. Titled “New Europe – New Names”, the programme promises to be notably diverse, showing films such as The Tribe from Ukraine, performed entirely in sign language, and the Lithuanian The Summer of Sangaile, which has been selected to compete at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

“New Europe – New Names” focuses on films made in Eastern and Central Europe, and, as its title suggests, directorial debuts. Only a director’s first or second film may be selected to compete.

The programme will once again be presented by the ERGO Insurance Group. “New Europe is the cinema region that is only now starting to be discovered, and is therefore very interesting. By giving the programme “New Europe – New Names” more and more of our attention each year, we aim to encourage young directors to show their films at Kino Pavasaris, to the cinema professionals arriving here from all over the world. We are also pleased to be a part of giving Lithuanian audiences the opportunity to see films other than the ones made in Hollywood”, – says Saulius Jokubaitis, ERGO Insurance Group’s Member of the Management Board in the Baltic States.

Joining the previously mentioned The Summer of Sangaile and The Tribe in this year’s competition programme will be In the Crosswind, a drama recognised as the best Estonian film, the Latvian Modris, two dark comedies from Hungary, For Some Inexplicable Reason and Afterlife, as well as a Bulgarian psychological thriller The Lesson.
