Fipa Selection 2015

Of the 1,300 films submitted to FIPA this year, the final selection features 128 international works across all genres, from 27 countries, including 33 French films.

In 2015, FIPA will shine a spotlight on highly-renowned authors including Rithy Panh, William Karel, Peter Kosminsky, Gerard Corbiau, John Bridcut, Richard Dindo, Hagai Levi, Philippe Harel, Hervé Hadmar, Manon Loizeau, and Sandrine Bonnaire; and will also turn the camera towards Asia with several films from China and Japan, and a special focus on Australian production.
The dramas presented are surprisingly innovative in terms of form and have also taken liberties in terms of narrative structure. They have dared to opt for black-and-white, voice-overs, and have made forays into documentary and animation.
While one-off programmes favour true stories and politics, series continue to astonish us with a wide variety of approaches used for brilliant plots.
In the documentary category, women take the foreground, whether they be in front of or behind the camera. The films selected paint striking portraits of heroines who are prepared to fight for their beliefs: these include victims of genocide in Rwanda, a boxing champion from Zambia, chess champions from Hungary, politically-militant women standing up for citizenship rights in Germany, those fighting to instil pride in transsexuals in Brazil, and others for musical creation in Israel. Others still assert women as important figures on the world stage, as in the case of the one and only, Nina Simone.
Last but not least, films from the Grands Reportages category bolster our courage through their portrayal of a violent world in which people at times lose all notions of humanity. Reporters take us to the heart of combat zones to decipher geo-political crises around the world from wars in Iraq, Chechnya, and Israel, to the difficult reconciliation process following the atrocities committed in Africa.
The selection echoes the world as it is, its richness and its darkness. Fortunately, women all take their rightful place, behind the camera or as politically-engaged citizens, and their strong words convey a message of humanity and hope.
