Cyprus Short Film Days 2012 Honours Teo Angelopoulos

    LIMASSOL: The International Short Film Festival of Cyprus kicks off on 13 October with a screening of Theo Angelopoulos's first short film entitled 'The Broadcast' (1968). This year's festival is dedicated in memory of acclaimed film directors Dinos Katsourides and Theo Angelopoulos.

    A total of programme of 66 international short films and 16 Cypriot shorts to be screened in two competitive programmes that will run from 13-20 October 2012.

    Highlights include The Wholly Family' (out of competition) by quirky film director Terry Gilliam.

    This is the second consecutive year that the festival is upgraded to an international event, having already established itself through five successful bi-annual festivals exhibiting Cypriot films in competition. The Festival is co-organised by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the Rialto Theatre.


    Through an exciting parallel programme, events and workshops, the 2nd International Short Film Festival of Cyprus becomes a platform for inspiring short cinematic experiences and for creative dialogue with directors and film professionals from Cyprus and abroad. 

    The parallel programme includes:
    1. A selection of recent, award winning films from Austria
    2. A selection of current and diverse works from the Arab Shorts Festival (2009-2011), that bring the conventional and one-dimensional picture of the Arab world into question in their very own way.
    3. Cyprus Retro II, a selection of Cypriot short films from previous years.
    4. A selection of Award Winning Short Films from Australia's Clare Valley Festival.
    5. Adult Theme Films: a selection of short films which focus on the theme of eroticism and love.
    6. A selection of animation films presented under the title Aspects of the Fantastic. Curated and Presented by Yiorgos Tsaggaris, Artistic Director of the 'Countryside Animafest - Views of the World'.

    Filmmakers will compete in both in the national and international section to win awards worth more than 20,000 euros.

    The selection of films and programming of screenings and parallel events, is undertaken by the artistic committee consisting of film directors Alexia Roider and Ioakim Mylonas.

    International Jury:
    The five- member international jury consists of the following film professionals and directors:

    • Antonis Papadopoulos, (President of the Jury), Greece. Artistic Director of the International Short Film Festival in Drama

    • Insa Wiese, Artistic Director of the Regensburg Short Film Week, Germany

    • Joe Tunmer – Director, United Kingdom, 2nd Prize for Best Short Film at the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus 2011 for his film "Conversation Piece"

    • Elias Demetriou - Director, Cyprus, Glocal Images award at 'Cyprus Film Days' International Film Festival 2012 for his feature film «Fish n' chips", Also awarded for his short films in international competitions

    • Gerald Weber– Sixpack Films, Austria, International Distribution & Sales agency of Austrian short and experimental films and videos.

    The Festival is under the auspices of the Mayor of Limassol, Mr Andreas Christou.
