Vavra Celebrates Centennial Birthday

    Czech director Otakar Vavra marked his 100th birthday on 28 Febrruary 2011. Vavra began working on films as a young university student in 1930, and went on to help establish FAMU, the famed Prague film school. He received the Czech Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2001, and the presidential Medal of Merit in 2004.

    Vavra directed his last full length film in 1989, but directed a short film in 2003. His more than 50 films include the acclaimed 1967 Romance for Bugle, and Venice film festival winner Panenství (Virginity).

    He is also noted for his tenure on the faculty of FAMU, where he taught for 50 years.
