New multiplex ceiling collapses

By Martin Aadamsoo
The newly opened Cinamon multiplex in Tallinn, Estonia, suffered a heavy blow to its launch and, potentially, audience figures for some time to come as the soundproof ceiling of its largest cinema hall collapsed only five days after opening.

The Cinamon multiplex (www.cinamon.ee), which opened its doors on Satruday, October 10, had already helped lower the average ticket price in Estonia by nearly 20% prior to its launch.

The accident caused the entire 7-hall cinema complex, housed in the new Solaris cultural centre (www.solaris.ee), to halt its operations while experts look for the cause of the accident. There were no people in the cinema at the time of the accident, averting serious casualties. The definitive causes of the crash may take months to establish, but faulty components, sloppy construction work and poor supervision may all be held accountable.

The mishap also dealt a blow to the theatrical release of the Venice-awarded Veiko Õunpuu's second feature The Temptation of St.Tony, scheduled for exclusive screening in Cinamon. The film has been forced to transfer to a smaller art house cinema as a result.
