Protest over Cable Fee in Latvia

By FNE Staff

Cable operators are protesting plans to charge them a fee for rebroadcasting national TV channels.

Local news reports say that three cable operators are protesting the charge that would involved national Latvian channels.

The operators say that the charges could result in Latvian stations being dropped from broadcast in the eastern part of the country, which is lightly populated. As a result, audiences would be reliant on Russian channels, which are free of charge, resulting in a dearth of Latvian news and broadcasts in the regions.
