WARSAW: Volhynia dominated the 2017 Polish Film Award The Eagles gala held in Warsaw on 20 March 2017. The box office hit directed by Wojciech Smarzowski was awarded nine prizes including best film, best director and the Audience Award.

"I have this idea, that viewers will go back home after seeing my film and hug their kids, because the grown-ups will shape the world that they will live in", said Wojciech Smarzowski while accepting the best director award.

The Last Family directed by Jan P. Matuszyński won four awards including best actor for Andrzej Seweryn and best actress for Aleksandra Konieczna. Hungarian Oscar winner Son of Saul by László Nemes won best European film award.

Head Of European Film Academy Agnieszka Holland and President of Polish Film Academy Dariusz Jabłoński made a statement to free Oleg Sentsov, as part of the #ReleaseOlegSentsov continuing support campaign for the Ukrainian filmmaker.  "I am proud that the Polish cinema is becoming an integral part of Europe", Holland said.

The 19th Polish Film Awards The Eagles gala took place on 20 February 2017. Nominations were chosen in 19 categories from among over 51 feature films released in Polish cinemas in 2016 and 92 documentaries.

Polish Film Awards The Eagles are organised by the Independent Film Foundation since 1999. They are considered to be the Polish equivalent of American Oscars, French Césars and British BAFTA awards. The films are chosen by over 600 members of the Polish Film Academy in a two-step vote.

The 2017 Polish Eagles Ceremony was broadcast by CANAL+, marking its first year off the air of public TV broadcaster TVP.
