Poland wins its first Emmy

    The live-action fairy tale The Magic Tree by Andrzej Maleszka, produced by Polish public broadcaster TVP SA, has become the first Polish winner of an International Emmy.

    The award in the Children and Youth category was announced Nov. 19 in New York at the 35th International Emmy Awards

    Maleszka had garnered an Emmy nomination in 1998 for the program "Telejulia," and Hanna Polak and Andrzej Celiński were nominated in 2006 for the film Children from Leningrad.

    A feature film will be made based on the television series with the support of the Polish Film Institute, whose director, Agnieszka Odorowicz, congratulated the winners.

    "It's not only a success for Maleszka and his team, but for the whole Polish film industry," she said, adding that she hoped the award willl encourage other producers to develop more projectss for young people and families.

    The International Emmy Awards Gala is the world's most prestigious international television event.
