Latvia at Berlinale and the EFM

    Latvia participates in two sections of the 63rd Film Festival in Berlin. Aik Karapetian’s feature People Out There was on the market screening. Janis Nords’ feature Mother, I Love You and Ēvalds Lācis’s animation Hedgehogs and the City participates in the official program Generation KPlus.

    Director of Hedgehogs and the City Ēvalds Lācis has worked as director of photography and script writer at Film Studio “AB” since 1998. In 2008 makes his debut as film director for the film The New Species, which was also premiered in the 58th Berlin International Film Festival, Generation section.

    The other Berlinale film Mother, I Love You is Janis Nord’s second feature. Adventurous and touching story of Raimonds, a misunderstood adolescent, who, in trying to console his relationship with his mother, delves into a world of trouble and petty crime. After extensively working as the 1AD on various Latvian features and TV commercials, Janis Nords shot his feature debut Amateur in 2008. The film won the Best Debut award at Latvian National Film Festival. The following year he co-wrote Return of Sergeant Lapins (directed by Gatis Smits), which premiered at Busan International Film Festival. He then studied film directing at National Film and Television School in Britain.

    Latvia Films are located in Martin Gropius Bau stand G12. There is a possibility to meet representatives from National Film Centre of Latvia, Riga Film Fund and The Film Producer’s Association of Latvia.

    Riga City Council promotes co-financing programme Riga Film Fund which offers Cash Rebate up to 20 %. We are also promoting upcoming pan-Latvian co-financing fund which will be available in second part of the year.
