7th Visegrad Film Forum went global!

The international event taking place from the 17th to the 21st of April at Film and TV Faculty of VŠMU (The Academy of Performing Arts) in Bratislava attracted interest of film enthusiasts from more than 20 countries. Five-day programme combining lectures and screenings of works of renowned guests with the presentation of students' works once again proved its unique position – all of that in a pleasant and informal atmosphere.

Cinematographer of the film Black Hawk Down compared European and American film industry

Right after the opening ceremony of the 7th Visegrad Film Forum represented by Three Colours: Blue (1993) starring French actress Juliette Binoche cinematographer Slawomir Idziak sat in front of the audience and spoke about his cooperation with the legendary director Krzysztof Kieślowski. Second day he expressed his opinion towards the key role of dramaturgy inside the scene during his two-hours lecture combined with a discussion. His presence at the event was ended by the discussion to Hollywood sci-fi classic Gattaca (1997) starring young Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. Apart from the lectures and discussions he devoted his time during the whole week to the ambitious film-makers at the intensive workshop for cinematographers.

Art director of Dunkirk revealed the story behind the making of blockbusters

Icelandic architect Eggert Ketilsson presented to the audience the ways where to search for unusual film locations how are the amazing film props made.  During his presentation he focused on two films made in cooperation with the director Christopher Nolan – Interstellar (2014) and Dunkirk (2017). Thanks to the photographs spectators had a unique chance to sneak peak in to the behind the scenes of films which were made with the minimum use of special effects.

Editor of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire unveiled some film tricks

British editor Mick Audsley with his spontaneous and authentic talk caught the attention of the audience when he unveiled fragments of his long-lasting career. He summarised everything from the very beginnings including the work on the independent film My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), through the work on Interview with the Vampire (1994) up to the problematic connected to the digital editing of visual effects in one of Harry Potter films. Later, he after almost 15 years watched again together with the audience Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys (1995) about a bizarre story from a post-apocalyptic world. Afterwards read the first reactions of the audience from the release year and he also spoke about the works in a cutting room regarding a work of art that doesn’t contain a linear structure, but uses various timelines.

    Debuting director, composer and documentarist

For the first time a debuting French director Joan Chemla introduced herself to a student audience. In addition to presenting her dark film noir melodrama If you saw his heart (2017) she inspired young ambitious film-makers by a masterclass about the possibilities in European cinematography.

Special cinematic version of a successful mini-series Burning Bush (2013) continued with the masterclass with the composer Antoni Komasa Łazarkiewic, who won Český lev award for the mentioned mini-series. Łazarkiewic talked about the inspirations and the process of creation score. Then he focused on moments, when the ideas of the composers are not matching with the directors on.

A substantial part of the last but one day of Visegrad Film Forum was devoted to the master of short documentaries Marcel Łozinski. He combined his series of short films, including 89mm from Europe (1993) nominated for an Academy Award, with a lecture about an observational documentary and a beauty of everyday reality.

Lively discussions stemmed from the meetings of students from partner film schools headed by the critics from the university in Lodz.
