KARLOVY VARY: The Bulgarian/Greek coproduction The Father by the directing team of Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov will premiere in the main competition of the Karlovy Vary IFF, which begins on 28 June 2019.

The film is the third feature co-directed by the pair. The 87-minute drama’s central character is a man whose wife has just died. The day after her funeral he and his son learn that his wife has supposedly been calling a neighbour’s home. The husband tries to contact his dead wife through a famous medium, while his son tries to bring him back to reality.

The film was produced by Abraxas Film and coproduced by the Greek post-production house Graal Films. The directors began developing the film in 2014. It received a low-budget grant of 200,000 EUR from the Bulgarian National Film Center in December 2016. World sales are handled by France’s WIDE.
