FNE at Venice 2017: Prize Winners

    VENICE: The Golden Lion, the top prize of the 74 Venice Film Festival went to Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water. The top prize in the Orizzonti section went to Nico, 1988 (Italy, Belgium) directed by Susanna Nicchiarelli.

    Poland scored with The Prince and the Dybbuk (Poland, Germany) directed by Elwira Niewiera, Piotr Rosolowski and produced by Film Art Production, which won the prize for Best Documentary on Cinema in the Venice Classics section. The film was supported by the Polish Film Institute and the Paris based Wide House has acquired international sales rights for the film. The film is about the career of Polish-Jewish director and producer Michal Waszynski, who made more than 40 films and worked in Hollywood and Europe with some of the biggest stars of the time.

    Poland scored again with the project The Harvesters / Die Stropers by Etienne Kallos (South Africa, France, Greece, Poland), which was one of the projects to be awarded in the Final Cut section of the Venice Production Bridge. The project already is supported by the Polish Film Institute and Eurimages. It is produced by Cinema Defacto/Spier Films (South Africa) and coproduced by Lava Films (Poland) and Heretic (Greece), Bord Cadre (France).

    Comedy Under The Tree (Iceland, Denmark, Poland, Germany) directed by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson, produced by Netop Films (Iceland) Madants (Poland) and Profile Pictures (Denmark) and supported by the Polish Film Institute, which screened in the Orizzonti section of the festival, was bought for North America by Magnolia Pictures during the festival. Polish sales outfit New Europe Film Sales is representing the film internationally.

    The international critics organisation FIPRESCI gave its top award to for Best Film in the Main Competition to Ex Libris – The New York Public Library (USA) directed by Frederick Wiseman and for Best Debut Film to Los Versos Del Olvido (France, Germany, Netherlands, Chile) directed by Alireza Khatami.

    The awards were handed out during the Critics Week awards ceremony in Venice, where the FNE FIPRESCI Critics Ratings were also announced with a special thanks to its sponsors the Lithuanian Film Centre, the Polish Filmmakers Association and the Polish Film Institute
