FNE at Cannes 2023: Serbian Cinema in Cannes

    ‘Lost Country’ by Vladimir Perišić included in the Critics’ Week program of the Cannes Film Festival

    This year, Serbia will have a representative in one of the official programs in Cannes, the organizers of this prestigious film festival have announced today. The feature film Lost Country by screenwriter and director Vladimir Perišić was included in the program “Criticis’s Week” (La Semaine de la Critiqie).

    The film takes us back to 1996 when, during student demonstrations against the Milošević regime in Serbia, fifteen-year-old Stefan goes through his own revolution. He is faced with the fact that his mother is the spokesperson and accomplice of the corrupt government against which his friends are protesting.

    Screenwriters are Vladimir Perišić and Alice Winocour. Directors of photography are Sarah Blum and Louise Botkay. The film was shot on 16 mm tape, edited by Martial Salomon, and sound was handled by Roman Dymny and Olivier Goinard.

    The film stars Jovan Ginić, Jasna Đuričić, Miodrag Jovanović, Dušan Valentić, Boris Isaković, Lazar Kocić, Ana Simeunović, Marija Škaričić and Pavle Čemerikić.

    Producers: Omar El Kadi, Nadia Turincev (Easy Riders Films, France), Vladimir Perišić (Trilema, Serbia), Janja Kralj (KinoElektron, France), co-producers: Vincent Quénault and Jeanne Geiben (Red Lion, Luxembourg) and Ankica Jurić Tilić (Kinorama, Croatia). The film was created with the support of: Film Center of Serbia, Arte France Cinema, CNC, Luxembourg Film Fund and Croatian Audiovisual Center.

    Perišić’s debut, the film “Ordinary People” from 2009, had its world premiere in the “Critics’ Week” program of the Cannes Film Festival that year.

    After studying literature at Paris VII, Vladimir Perišić graduated in film direction at La Femis. His graduate film was shown as part of the Kinofondation selection at the Cannes festival in 2003. His short film Our Shadows Will was included in the collective film production “The Bridges of Sarajevo”, shown as part of the official selection of the Cannes festival in 2014. Lost Country is his second feature film.

    The “Criticis’s Week” program takes place from May 17th to 25th 2023.
