FESTIVALS: Cinematik Features Slovak Documentary Competition

By

PIESTANY: Four long Slovak documentaries will screen in the Cinematik film festival (www.cinematik.sk) documentary competition, taking place 7-13 September 2012 in the Slovak spa resort of Piestany.

The festival will also screen nine European films selected by film critics, mostly well-known award winners, in an international competition.

Alongside the competition, the festival is launching a section of films from the Bratislava-based international media company Film Europe (www.filmeurope.eu) consisting of six European films (including one restored masterpiece) making their Slovak premieres at the festival.

The documentary competition includes one debut film by Paula Sisková. A jury of young filmmakers and film critics will give the winning film the Film Europe award.

    The competing documentary films are:

    • The Bells of Happiness (OZ Žudro) directed by Marek Šulík and Jana Bučka, a film about two Romany cousins who are fans of a pair of Czechoslovak pop icons.
    • Disease of the Third Power (atelier.doc) directed by Zuzana Piussi, a political documentary about the flaws in the Slovak justice system.
    • …I Don’t Think I Will Return (LUX communication) directed by Paula Sisková, following four women on a walking pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
    • Tales of the Tatra Mountains Peaks (K2 Studio) directed by Pavol Barabáš, a journey to the heights of Slovakia’s high mountain range.
