FNE at Slovenian Film Festival 2012: Competition: Thanks for Sunderland Thanks for Sunderland, director Slobodan Maksimovic

POTOROZ: Sarajevo born Slovenian director Slobodan Maksimovic is in the main competition of the 15th Slovenian Film Festival (www.fsf.si) with his feature film debut Thanks for Sunderland.

The film is a dark comedy, very much in the spirit of the time – the current economic and social crisis that pervades a large part of central and eastern Europe. It also represents a cinematographic comment on the divide in Slovene society between people who enjoy comfortable lives and those who struggle for their very survival.

The hero of the story is Johan, an honest hardworking man whose luck is running out. He nevertheless retains his faith in a better tomorrow until he loses his job and his wife – all in one day. Desperate, he is pushed over the edge by a newspaper article in which he reads about the “difficult” life of a rising celebrity. He decides to commit suicide, but even that doesn‘t turn out exactly as planned.

Film was produced by Janez Pirc and RTV Slovenija (www.rtvslo.si).
