Submissions are now open for Ex Oriente Film 2012, the year-long international workshop supporting the development and funding of creative documentary films from Central and Eastern Europe. Starting this year, the deadline for application to Ex Oriente Film has moved to April 20.
Ex Oriente Film is an international workshop dedicated to the development and funding of creative documentary films in Central and Eastern Europe. At three workshops (the 4th session focused on rough cuts is for selected projects only) that take place in the course of one year, directors and producers develop their projects and funding strategies and benefit from the assistance and valuable advice provided by established European producers, directors, experts and commissioning editors. The Ex Oriente Film training programme is completed with the co-production meeting East European Forum that gives documentary filmmakers a chance to pitch their project and secure funding from West European and North American broadcasters. The three residential workshops and the East European Forum pitching are supplemented by the Doc Launch follow-up programme that tracks the projects till their completion.

Participants: Out of all submitted projects, 14 projects will be selected, i.e., 28 participants (14 director-producer teams) will be included in the workshop.
Participation Fee: The participation fee is EUR 1,500 per selected project (includes all accommodation, coffee breaks and lunches during the three workshops for 1-2 pers.).
Scholarships: Participants from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia may apply for a scholarship to cover part of the accommodation and participation fees. Applicants must prove there is no possibility of scholarship in their own country and that the project is not supported by any development funding. To confirm this, applicants must send us a request with an official letter from their local MEDIA Desk or national film centre.
Conditions of Participation: Participants must be proficient in English. All workshop sessions must be attended by both the producer and the director.
EX ORIENTE STEP BY STEP
1st Session: “Find Your Originality”
Place and dates: mid-June 2012 (Czech Republic, TBC)
The first workshop session aims to offer the participants inspiration as they develop their projects. The programme is divided between various master classes of visiting experts and practical intensive work on the projects. In the practical part of the programme, participants mainly work on the processing and development of their documentary projects, focusing on contents and storytelling. Workshops help participants analyze and understand the potential of their subject matter, ideas and plot, to find out what makes them universal, to expand on and strengthen these very points:
- story of the film and its protagonists;
- analyzing the strong and weak points of the project and its international dimension;
- constructing a basic concept for the strategy of the film’s production and financing;
- group work and individual consultations to the project;
- film screenings for inspiration;
- theory sessions on how to write and develop a professional project for international co-production;
- basic orientation within the system of European funding, grants and broadcasters.
2nd Session: “Production Development”
Place and dates: October 24 – 30, 2012 (Jihlava, Czech Republic)
The second workshop session focuses on budgeting, legal aspects of co-productions, strategies for selecting commissioning editors and the proper television format, as well as a deeper creative development of the projects, the rough material as well as the documentary script. The second session is specific in that it has a partly separate programme for directors and producers. It also puts a strong emphasis on the development of the projects distribution strategy.
3rd Session: “The Market Opens”
March 4 – 10, 2013 (Prague, Czech Republic)
The third workshop session is dedicated mainly to communication skills and distribution plan and sales, training in pitching techniques, post-pitching negotiations and defining the potential of East European independent producers in the EU film market. The three sessions are completed with a two-day pitching forum where all participants pitch their projects.
The three residential workshops and the East European Forum pitching are supplemented by the Doc Launch follow-up programme which tracks the projects till their completion.
Year-round Consultancy: An important aspect of Ex Oriente Film are the year-round online sessions and consultations led by the lead and guest tutors of the workshop. Further information about Ex Oriente Film are available HERE.

It has been seven years thanks to the initiative of Slawomir Idziak filmmakers from Poland and Europe meet to develop their ideas and make films to learn new technologies. In 2012 for the second time it will take place in Krakow, Poland (from April 27th till May 6th, 2012).
INTERACTIVE CINEMA
We invite our participants to create an interactive film show. All films made at Film Spring Open-Air will be related to a music show, so called mastertrack. The soundtrack from this event will serve as a timeline, which gives time reference to other tracks. This means that following film tracks can show events that are taking place in another place but at exactly the same time.
Finally, Film Spring Open will show selected films on the Internet on a specially designed Interactive Interface (so-called Interface ID) build in cooperation with National Audiovisual Institute.
The viewers will also have the possibility to see our work on YouTube’s Partner Channel so that films made by our participants could reach millions of viewers around the world.
FUTURE OF CINEMA AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES
Following our main objective, which is future of cinema and new technologies, Film Spring Open-Air 2012 program focuses on workshops (including hands-on tests of equipment and software) as well as professional lectures.
Apart from a continuation of successful 3D Workshops and Documentary Workshops it will be also dedicated to interactive dramaturgy, meetings with outstanding filmmakers and new production models of low-budget films.

After a great success of 3D Workshops in 2011, FilmSpringers have recently worked with DOP Slawomir Idziak on the shooting plan of high-budget German production in 3D, "Measuring the World". We will present newest technologies for 3D films (shooting and postproduction ones).

Thursday’s opulent programme launchesas early as at 10am. At noon, a well-known Danishindependent film consultant and tutor Tue Steen Müllerpresents his popular overview of the latest documentary production: look forthe Documentary Tour of Europe including film excerpts. Later on, at 3pm, thereis a Case Studydealing with some particular examples of German-Bulgarian co-production. - The directors of "A Monster in Paris", "Ronal the Barbarian" and "Zarafa" among the nominees
The European animation industry will pay tribute to the sector's personalities of the year during the Cartoon Movie Tributes ceremony on 9 March in Lyon, France. Participants of the co-production market Cartoon Movie will vote for the director, producer and distributor who they believe have made an outstanding contribution to the animated feature industry over the past year. The shortlist include nine nominees from Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and the UK.
Competing in the category of European Director of the Year are Eric "Bibo" Bergeron for "A Monster in Paris", a French film produced by EuropaCorp that has sold more than 1.6 million tickets in its home country and has also been a hit in the UK, Russia and Belgium; Thorbjørn Christoffersen, Philip Einstein Lipski & Kresten Vestbjerg Andersen for "Ronal the Barbarian", a stereoscopic 3D Danish parody film already released in 20 countries; and French directors Rémi Bezançon & Jean-Christophe Lie for "Zarafa", a 2D film selected for competition at the Berlinale 2012 and inspired by the true story of the first giraffe arrived in France.
Three companies will compete for the European Distributor of the Year award: Cinéart, the independent distributor from Belgium and the Netherlands that has released films like "Waltz with Bashir", "Persepolis", "The Rabbi's Cat", "Eleanor's Secret" and "A Town Called Panic" ; Pathé Distribution, the film distribution and international sales arm of French giant Pathé with collaborations in France and the UK, which has bought titles such as "The Illusionist", "Zarafa" and "Pourquoi j'ai (pas) mangé mon père"; and Romania's Transilvania Film, an active company focusing on arthouse cinema which has distributed "Persepolis", "The Illusionist" and "Ronal the Barbarian".
Blue Spirit Animation, Moonscoop and Perro Verde Films will vie for the European Producer of the Year tribute. With a long track record in the animation world, France's Blue Spirit Animation produced "Le Tableau", a film by Jean-François Laguionie selected for Cartoon Movie 2012. Headquartered in Paris with studios in Wales, Luxembourg and Los Angeles, Moonscoop is one of the leading worldwide animation production studios and has recently produced "Titeuf" which has reached 1.3 million admissions. Rounding up the list of finalists is Perro Verde Films, Spanish production company which has just premiered the Goya award-winning "Wrinkles", a film about Alzheimer's and friendship, selected to open this year's Cartoon Movie.
A total of 55 new European animation films and projects will be presented at Cartoon Movie 2012 with the aim of speeding up financing and distribution. France, which is behind 40% of the projects, once again stands out at this professional forum, which continues to showcase more and more films developed in stereoscopic 3D and targeting adult audiences. Cartoon Movie 2012 will be held in Lyon, France, from 7-9 March.

Film “Policeman” presents the challenges of contemporary Israel in Vilnius film theatres
Festivals 22-02-2012The Israeli film Policeman opened in "Skalvija" and "Pasaka" cinemas this week. It is a drama about a curse of the modern society: the widening gap between the rich and the remaining population, and the modern revolutionaries inspired by this gap.
Policeman is the debut film of a young filmmaker Nadav Lapid who has already won the acclaim of the international film community. The script for the film was written by the director for the Cannes Film Festival residency programme Cinéfondation.
Yaron, the main character of the film, is in the elite police force, which he adores. He sees himself and his colleagues as the weapon of the state aimed at its enemies. Yaron cherishes his masculinity and his masculine friendship with his teammates. His wife is pregnant with their first child. Everything appears to be perfect.
However, one day Yaron's team gets a task to liberate millionaires held hostage. Radical activists who have taken the hostages are not only chanting ghastly slogans that "it's time for the poor to get rich and for the rich to get dying." They are also addressing the police officers who are aiming their weapons at them: "Policemen, you are not our enemies! Policemen, you are also oppressed.!"
The unexpected confrontation with the hostile, radical activists rocks Yaron's perception of the world.
"In the 60s and 70s, when political terrorism rose in Western Europe, Israel was socialist, basically egalitarian. Today, Israel has the widest economical gaps in the Western world.", said Nadav Lapid. "Class conflicts are shadowed by the conflict with the common enemy-the Palestinians. But, below the surface, boil a rage and a feeling of abuse. In " Policeman", they mature to an eruption, strangled by a force greater than itself."
"Policeman" is the first Israeli film distributed theatrically in Lithuania. It was introduced to the audiences by Kaunas International Film Festival which is participating in the unique network for international festivals and distributors"Eye on Films" supported by the European Union programme MEDIA Mundus.
The film has opened in the film theatre "Pasaka" on February 16 and in film centre "Skalvija" on February 17 d.
