GRANTS: Bulgaria Announces First Production Grants for 2017

    SOFIA: The Bulgarian National Film Center allotted 1,856,000 EUR / 3,630,000 BGN at its first session on 29 June 2017. Seven projects, including two feature films with higher budgets, one feature film with lower budget, one debut feature and three short films, received production funding. The development of five feature films was also supported.

    The amount of 1,211,780EUR / 2,370,000 BGN will be split between Fear, written and directed by Ivailo Hristov (produced by Pro Film), and Spinning Top, written by Vladislav Todorov and directed by Theodore Ushev (produced by Peripeteia).

    Ivailo Hristov previously made Losers (Pro Film), which was awarded with the Golden George at the 37th Moscow IFF and the Golden Rose at the 33rd Golden Rose NFF. Theodore Ushev’s eight minutes animated film Blind Vaysha, produced by Marc Bertrand for the National Film Board of Canada and coproduced with Arte France, became one of the Academy Award nominees in the short animated films sectionin 2017.

    Low budget feature film Petya of My Petya, written by Neli Dimitrova and Valentina Minkova, directed by Alexander Kosev and produced by BAF Pictures expects to receive 204,520 EUR / 400,000 BGN, while debut feature Ashes Over the Sun, written by Zlatimir Kolarov and Alexander Kalinov, directed by Bogomil Kalinov and produced by Invictus Ltd, will receive 219,859 EUR / 430,000 BGN.

    A total of 93,034 EUR / 180,000 BGN was announced for the short films, while 51,130 EUR / 100,000 BNG will go to script development.

    At this stage, all projects are approved by the NFC selective committee, but in order to determine the final amounts of grants, the NFC requires producers to assure the total financing of their films. It is not excluded that some producers might receive other amounts than expected.
