BUDAPEST: Balázs Krasznahorkai's family drama Ravine / Hasadék debuted and won the best feature film prize at the Hungarian Motion Picture Festival, which took place in Veszprém 23 - 26 June 2021. The film depicts a troubled father and son relationship, starring a Hungarian doctor Bálint, who returns from Budapest to his Transylvanian hometown among the Maramures Mountains for his father's funeral.

Upon his arrival, the doctor meets his teenage son, whom he had not seen for seventeen years. His trip soon takes a fatal turn. Bálint is confronted with the fact that his son Simon is living a self-destructive life under the tyranny of local gang leader Dumitru.

The feature raises questions about the power and controversy of family attachment, the fateful relation of crime and punishment, and ponders the possibility of a new beginning and redemption. The director's first feature film was shot from May to July 2019 in Hungary and Romania.

In addition to the main character Levente Molnár (Tall Tales / Apró mesék), the film also features Dénes Babai, Lajos Kovács, Levente Orbán, Rozi Lovas, Roland Tzafetás, as well as other actors from Hungary and Romania. The script was written by Balázs Krasznahorkai, Balázs Lovas and Balázs Lengyel (Lajkó - Gypsy in Space / Lajkó - Cigány az űrben). György Réder (Spiral, Lajkó - Gypsy in Space) lensed the film.

It is produced by Péter Reich and Gábor Szántó in cooperation with Pipacs Film and AGA Média. The film was supported by the National Film Institute - Hungary with 821,715 EUR / 289 m HUF. It is distributed by Budapestfilm in Hungary.

Ravine / Hasadék had its world premiere at the A-category International Film Festival of India, Goa in January 2021, and was screened for the first time in Hungary at the Hungarian Motion Picture Festival. It is set to be released on 9 September at the local cinemas.
