PRODUCTION: Gábor Dettre in Postproduction with Hungarian Feature Silent Night

BUDAPEST: Hungarian director/writer/producer Gábor Dettre is currently in postproduction with his feature film Silent Night / Csendes éj, which was entirely crowfounded through a campaign that ran from December 2022 to January 2023. The film will be released in Hungarian cinemas on Christmas 2023.

A young boy (Benett Vilmányi) and an old woman (Piroska Molnár) meet by chance on Christmas night. From behind the dark clouds of their lives, full of secrets, the sun unexpectedly emerges for them too.

The main cast includes Piroska Molnár and Benett Vilmányi.

"Our story is about a man who, if he is to survive the disasters hanging over his head, has to realise that he has to come closer to others. But this also requires a change in his mentality and in the way he treats his fellow human beings, by giving them empathy and love," Gábor Dettre told FNE.

The film is a Hungarian coproduction and it is produced by Tamás Yvan Topolánszky and Claudia Sümeghy through JUNO11 Pictures in coproduction with Judit Romwalter through SPARKS Camera & Lighting.

“Christmas is that time of the year when we usually tune out the noise of the outside world and we create a special bubble around our loved ones that is impossible to penetrate. In Silent Night we meet a young man and an elderly woman who no longer have that kind of safety bubble: they are doomed to loneliness. The film explains how they connect with one another and how they unconsciously practice empathy until that particular safety bubble slowly forms around them”, producer Tamás Yvan Topolánszky told FNE.

The budget is around 30,000 EUR.

Besides crowdfunding, the producers received rental support from the Sparks Camera and Lighting rental house, as well as other discounts from postproduction houses for sound mixing and colour grading.

The film was shot for 10 days in February 2023.

JUNO11 Distribution will release it in domestic cinemas.
