Gdynia Polish Film Festival Competition spotlight: Flying Pigs

By Katarzyna Grynienko

After a promising debut, Anna Kazejak comes back with Flying Pigs, a moving story about honor and friendship tested in the brutal world of soccer fans.

Flying pigs is a story of four characters who center their lives around supporting the local soccer club. When the team ceases to exists, their world is turned upside down. Oskar, a former hooligan and a strong leader in the circle of the local soccer fans, is forced to change from sweats into a suit and get a job with the owner of another club. His new post tests his loyalties, forces him to develop another outlook on life and grow up. Meanwhile he finds himself in the middle of a love triangle with his brother and his girlfriend. Kazejak presents a rough and energetic vision of a community where brutality and raw emotions are mixing with cold business and calculation.

Kazejak is thought to be one of the most interesting young directors in contemporary Polish cinema. After several awarded short and documentary films, in 2005 she made her feature debut Ode To Joy with Jan Komasa and Maciej Migas. As the youngest debuting directors in Polish cinema of the last decade, they received high praise for the maturity of their work and were awarded with the Special Jury Prize during the 2005 Gdynia Polish Film Festival (www.fpff.pl). Kazejak had recently completed a long documentary titled Bocznica and decided to try her strengths in an solo feature project. She gathered an experienced cast of Polish actors, including Cezary Pazura as the club boss and Paweł Małaszyński, a rising young star, as Oskar. They are accompanied by Piotr Rogucki, Eryk Lubos, 2009 winner of the Leszek Cybulski Prize, Olga Bołądź, Karolina Gorczyca and Agata Kulesza.

The movie was shot between fall 2009 in Grodzisk Wielkopolski. Flying Pigs is produced by Akson Studio (www.akson-studio.pl) with a budget of 4.2 million PLN (1 million EUR) and 2 million PLN financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl).

The movie will open in Polish cinemas on November 5, 2010, nationally distributed by ITI Cinema (www.iticinema.com.pl).
