COTTBUS: Iglika Triffonova’s The Prosecutor, the Defender, the Father and His Son aka False Witness will screen in the main competition of the 26th Cottbus Film Festival, which opens on 8 November 2016. The film is a coproduction between Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Triffonova wrote the script focusing on one of the first and crucially important cases of the Hague Tribunal against a Serbian war criminal responsible for the massacre of Bosnian Muslim civilians.

"We are often asked whether The Prosecutor, the Defender, the Father and His Son repeats the issues raised in Storm (2009) by Hans-Christian Schmidt. It does not, of course, repeat Storm, which we highly appreciate, but even if the themes of the two films seem similar, it is the point of view that makes a film something more than just a story. The Prosecutor, the Defender, the Father and His Son is our point of view; we are not the victims, nor the aggressors, nor the judges. But we are from the Balkans; we want to say what we think about the way the West presumes to have the ultimate right to judge, without really knowing us,” Triffonova and Valkanova told FNE.

The film stars Romane Bohringer, Samuel Fröler, Izudin Bajrovič, Ovanes Torosyan, Nermina Lukač and Krasimir Dokov. Cast and crew were gathered from eight countries.

Shooting took place in Sarajevo, Amsterdam, Malmö and Ystad. The Hague Tribunal set was constructed in the Ystad Studios from Sweden, where the director and the international crew worked for three weeks.

Bulgaria’s Rossitsa Valkanova produced through Klas Film in coproduction with the Bulgarian National Television, Petra Goedings through the Netherland’s Phanta Vision and Ulf Synnerholm through Sweden’s Filmlance International.

The film was supported by the Bulgarian National Film Center, Bulgarian National Television, the Netherland’s Film Fund, the Swedish Film Institute and Swedish Television.

The script won the ScripTeast Krzysztof Kieslowski Award for Best Eastern and Central European Script in 2011. The project was also selected for the Cinelink Work in Progress programme in 2014.

The Prosecutor, the Defender, the Father and His Son opened the 20th Sofia IFF in March 2016, and on 24 May 2016, the Day of the Slavonic Alphabet and Culture, Triffonova was awarded with the Order of St Cyril and Methodius by Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev.
