BUCHAREST: Beta Cinema has acquired Golden Bear-winner Călin Peter Netzer’s upcoming feature Familiar, which is a Romanian/French/Taiwanese coproduction currently in postproduction. Pre-sales will start at the upcoming Marché du Film (16 – 24 May 2023) in Cannes.

The script penned by Netzer with Iulia Lumânare centers around Dragoș, a Romanian film director in his forties (played by Emanuel Pârvu), who decides to make a film about his family's emigration to Germany in the 80s, that followed his mother’s extramarital affair. Because the emigration happened under suspicious conditions, Dragoș investigates undercover, with help from his former girlfriend, Ilinca (played by Iulia Lumânare). As he delves deeper into his family's past, secrets come to light, leading to revelations about certain ties with the Secret Service.

“Using the present as a tool that makes the past intelligible, my main character instinctively recreates the mise-en-scene of the past, recreating the love triangle his parents once had formed and that had led to the never reconciled disruption of the family”, Călin Peter Netzer said in a statement.
