BRATISLAVA: The Slovak cinema chain Cinemax will expand into Romania with plans to open its first two cinemas in Bucharest and Brasov.

Cinemax is owned by leading Slovak distribution company Continental Film.

“These units represent a first step towards developing our brand in Romania, where we will expand our network and will aim to increase our market share,” said Cinemax general manager Michal Drobny.

The first two cinemas will operate 24 screens with an investment of 4 m EUR, with future plans to open 30 screens. Cinemax owns 13 cinemas in Slovakia with a total of 65 screens,

Romania had only 90 cinemas with 386 in operation at the end of 2017, and a similarly low per capita attendance rate of 0.73, among the lowest in Europe.
