KARLOVY VARY: Jelka Stergel, director of the Slovenian Film Fund (SFF) and Eurimages representative for Slovenia, has won her battle against her dismissal from her post as director of the SFF by the Slovenian government.

In a court decision on 26 June the court ruled that her dismissal was invalid. Stergel remains in her position as director of SFF.

"I am glad that the court has confirmed that there was no legal justification for the dismissal," said Stergel who is presently attending KVIFF. "This court decision is important not only for me, but it is also a good sign for the maturity fo the civil society in Slovenia. It means that our legal institutions are independent from manipulation by political power." The directorship of the SFF is a non-political appointment.

In addition to her other activities Stergel recently was appointed director of international relations of the Film New Europe Association which is a voluntary position. She will be shaping the association's strategy for building and strengthening relationships with CEE and pan European film institutions and organizations.

The FNE Association is the main shareholder of Film New Europe and FNE Daily.
