FNE Film Meets Games: Romanian Game Development Industry With Record Growth

    UCHAREST: Romanian game developers have announced record growth in 2021, with 67% of companies doing game design noting an increase in revenues according to the Romanian Game Developers Association.

    In 2021 67% of Romanian game studios expect revenue growth and over half of them are game development companies, designing the games in house. The development of the game industry in Romania sparks interest in investors and in 2020 and 2021 a number of Romanian studios were acquired by well‑known international companies (Green Horse Games was acquired by Miniclip, Whyttest was acquired by Testronic group and AMC Romania was acquired by Keywords Studios) and international studios have opened studios in Romania (Funcom, Kolibri Games, Ten Square Games, Wolcen, GlobalStep, etc). In 2020, a total of 24 games were published, which surpasses the joint number of games published in 2019 and 2018 altogether.

    The last year continues the growth in the game development and design sector noted in 2020, when the revenues from the Romanian games industry increased by 19.1% reaching 218.5 m EUR. The Romanian game’s market is rich in game development companies and according to a report by the Romanian Game Developers Association their number jumped from 100 in 2019 to 120 in 2020.

    Among the most popular games developed in Romania in 2020 are Watch Dogs: Legion (Ubisoft), FIFA21 (Electronic Arts), Door Kickers 2: Task Force North (KillHouse Games) and Zombieland: AFK Survival (Metagame).

    The Top 10 Romanian game development companies in 2020, based on the revenue included: Ubisoft Romania, Electronic Arts Romania, Gameloft Romania, Amber Studio, Playtika, Ati Studios, Supper Hippo Games/Nutaku, Quantic Lab, Green Horse Games, AMC Romania.
