FNE at Sarajevo IFF 2014: Turkey and Georgia Win in Sarajevo

    The touching Turkish drama Song of my Mother, the story of an aging woman and her son forced to leave their native Kurdish village and live in Istanbul, received the main prize of the 20th Sarajevo International Film Festival and 16,000 EUR provided by the Council of Europe.

    The film, directed by Erol Mintaş and coproduced by Mintas Film (Turkey), Arizona Productions (France) and Mitosfilm (Germany), won the prize of international jury, chaired by Hungarian director Béla Tarr for its “courageous simplicity and pure cinematic language.” Feyyaz Duman playing a “stoic Kurdish teacher and writer in Istanbul” received the Best Actor award and a prize of 2,500 EUR. and was announced “best actor” of the festival.

    The Special Jury Prize and 10,000 EUR provided by Agnes B went to the Georgian-French coproduction Brides directed by Tinatin Kajrishvili and produced by Millimeter Film and Adastra Films. Mari Kitia won the Best Actress award and a prize of 2,500EUR for “playing a complex role with strength and dignity.”

    Oscar-winning Bosnia & Herzegovina director Danis Tanović received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo prize as did designer and filmmaker Agnes B and Mexican actor Gael García Bernal.

    Speaking about the 2014 CineLink edition, producer Amra Baksic Camo told FNE: “This year it became obvious that more and more producers want to make regional coproductions with lower budgets.”

    The festival hosted 240 films from 60 countries, 3,000 foreign guests and 400 journalists.
