TALLINN: Rainer Sarnet’s feature film The Invisible Fight / Nähtamatu võitlus, which is a coproduction between Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Greece, has been sold to North America after a successful North American premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest in September 2023. Theatrical, digital and video distribution rights have been acquired by Kino Lorber, which plans to release the film in 2024.

The Invisible Fight had its international premiere in August 2023, in the main competition of the Locarno Film Festival. Sarnet’s kung fu comedy has also been screened at the Love & Anarchy Film Festival in Helsinki, Fantastic Fest and Sitges, and it was also the opening film at the RIGA IFF.  Soon, the film will run in the Feature Film Competition of the 33rd FilmFestival Cottbus (7-12 November 2023.).

The Invisible Fight takes place in the 1970s Soviet Union, when young hooligan Rafael becomes a target of kung fu robbers while serving as a border guard on the border of the Soviet Union and China. After returning home, Rafael finds his way to a monastery and meets Orthodox monks, whose skills are even cooler than those of the Chinese. Here begins Rafael’s comical journey to the invincible humility, a journey full of temptation, faith, love and joy.

Produced with a budget of 2.7 m EUR, the film was shot in Estonia, Greece and Latvia as a coproduction between Estonia’s Homeless Bob Production, Latvia’s White Picture, Helsinki-filmi from Finland and Neda Film from Greece.

The film was funded by the Estonian Film Institute, the National Film Centre of Latvia, the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the Finnish Film Foundation, the Greek Film Centre, Eurimages, Creative Europe MEDIA, the Tallifornia Film Fund, and the film funds of the co-producing countries.

In Estonia, The Invisible Fight will be theatrically released on 8 December 2023.
