WARSAW: Director Åse Svenheim Drivenes is shooting Around My Family Table, focused on the lives of children whose parents were forced to leave and work abroad.

The film focuses on the lives of 13-year-old Kuba and 8-year-old Mikołaj, whose parents were forced to leave Poland to work abroad after their business went bankrupt. Their father works in a factory in Scotland and the boys have hardly seen him since he left two years ago. Their mother works in Austria, and travels between Vienna and Poland to see them every weekend. Kuba dreams of a normal family life where his family is gathered around the table in the evenings.

"My motivation to make this film began when I learned that thousands of children live on their own because their parents have left them to work abroad,” said Drivenes. "Researching the subject, I found that the biggest group of immigrants in Norway are workers from Poland. I realized that these are parents with children who they haven’t seen for months, sometimes years. Thousands of these children grow up suffering from home alone syndrome."

Table shooting launched in early August and is expected to last trough December. Drivenes and his crew will use locations in Zakliczyn, Cracow and Vienna. The film is produced by Saint & Usant and AMP Polska. Producers are Tone Grøttjord, Anita Rehoff Larsen and Edward Porembny. The budget is 1 million PLN (234,000 EUR) with support from the Polish Film Institute and TVP Kultura, according to Porembny .

The premiere is planned for 2014.
