Strong Opening for Wajda's Last Film in Poland

    WARSAW: Andrzej Wajda's last film Afterimage sold over 100,000 tickets since its opening on 13 January 2016. This is the first film distributed by Akson Distribution, a new venture of Akson Studio.

    Representatives of Akson told FNE that Afterimage generates a tremendous interest abroad. It will be distributed in France by KMBO with the French premiere set for 22 February 2017 and it will also be released in the USA by Film Movement in 2017.


    The film starring Bogusław Linda is Andrzej Wajda's last work and was completed before his death on 9 October 2016. The story is centered around the life of avant-garde artist Władysław Strzemiński, who founded the art school in Lódź after WWII and was abused and persecuted by the communist regime.

    Afterimage was chosen as the Polish candidate for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film but did not get shortlisted.

    The film was produced by Akson Studio in coproduction with the National Audiovisual Institute, TVP, EC1 Łódź - Miasto Kultury, Fundacja Tumult. It was supported by the Polish Film Institute. The film was shot with the logistic support from Lodz Film Commission.

    Afterimage is the first film distributed by Akson Distribution, a new venture of the film's producer Akson Studio, launched in 2016. The business model of a production studio and a distribution company joined into one body is new for the Polish market.  

    In the last five years, films produced by Akson Studio got in the top 20 of Polish box office hits, including Warsaw 44 by Jan Komasa with 1,752,108 admissions in 2014 and Wałęsa. A Man of Hope by Andrzej Wajda with 970,520 admissions in 2013.
