PRODUCTION: Rosłaniec Shooting Baby Blues

By Katarzyna Grynienko

Katarzyna Rosłaniec, the director of Mall Girls, is shooting Baby Blues on the topic of teen pregnancy. The shoot for the film started in the second half of May in Warsaw and will last through the end of June 2011.

Baby Blues follows the lives of Natalia and Kuba, two teenage parents struggling with their relationship and new responsibilities. While the girl is focused on her new baby and questions the need for a partner, Kuba finds that it is his duty to take care of Natalia and his son. Their weak attempt to live together is disrupted by Martyna, a friend who works at an advertising agency and who introduces them to a new world, offering something more then baby food and diapers.

After the success of her Mall Girls, a drama about girls offering sex for shopping with a cast of young, amateur actresses, Rosłaniec decided to look for new faces from all over the country. A nation wide search was organized by television stations MTV and VIVA Polska, and from a group of over 6,000 candidates, seventeen-year-old Magdalena Berus was selected to play the lead. Joining her in the cast are teenage actors Klaudia Bułka, Nikodem Rozbicki and Michał Trzeciakwski, as well as experienced Polish performers Danuta Stenka, Jann Frycz, Magdalena Boczarska ,Renata Dancewicz and Mateusz Kościukiewicz.

Baby Blues is produced by Zentropa International Poland ( www.zentropa.dk ) with a budget of 6.2 million PLN (EUR 1.5 million). The distributor of the film Kino Świat (www.kinoswiat.pl ) told FNE that script for the film was very well received when it was presented during the IFF in Rome in 2010 as part of the "New Cinema Network" script section. The film also got very good notes from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl) experts and received 3.5 million PLN in financing from the institution. The national premiere of the picture is planned for 2012.
