CANNES: Întregalde by Romanian Radu Muntean and Murina, the debut feature by Croatian director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, have been selected for the 53rd edition of Cannes Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs), which will be held 6-17 July 2021. When Night Meets Dawn by another Romanian director Andreea Cristina Borțun is among the short films selected for the same section.

The suspense story written by Răzvan Rădulescu, Alex Baciu and Radu Muntean for Întregalde follows three humanitarians whose mission in a remote village called Întregalde, in the Apuseni Mountains, goes awry. “I wanted to make a film about the limits of generosity and its place in the personal project of each human being,” Radu Muntean told FNE.

The main characters are played by Maria Popistașu, Ilona Brezoianu, Alex Bogdan and the non-professional actor Luca Sabin. Cristian Mungiu’s Voodoo Films holds the international rights of the film.

Murina focuses on a Croatian family, whose members travel to an island where they have to face the hidden violence that exists between them”, said Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović.

Her debut feature is produced by Croatia’s Antitalent and Brazil’s RT Features of Rodrigo Teixeira, in coproduction with Croatia's Spiritus Movens, and Slovenia's SPOK Films and Staragara. Martin Scorsese is among the executive producers.

Gracija Filipović is the leading actress, and the cast includes Leon Lučev, Danica Ćurčić and Cliff Curtis.

Kusijanović became the first Croatian to be accepted to the Cannes residence Cinéfondation, where she developed Murina, which had been earlier developed through the First Films First programme of the Goethe Institut.

In the short film When Night Meets Dawn by Andreea Cristina Borțun, produced by Romania’s Atelier de Film, a teenage boy goes looking for his new friend on the hot streets of an eerie city. As the blue night rises, a visceral journey begins. Nature around him becomes exotic and the exotic becomes alluring.

The Director’s Fortnight selection includes 24 feature films and nine short films.
